To (hopefully) help demystify the selections, here’s a quick rundown of one direct user experience with some of the more popular USA made diapers, with a sharp eye on durability, ease of use, and function (Thanks Sarah!!):

Thirsties Duo Wrap: The double leg gusset truly contains every would-be blow out. The only leaks incurred during use were user error (i.e. not ensuring the diaper tucked in completely). The PUL (inner fabric) and outer fabric are very durable and made to last. I’ve used my covers for 8 months and with the exception of one or two sneaking into the dryer, they are 100% line dried making them like new after each wash. Compared to other covers, it is modestly priced for it’s sturdy design. The leg elastics fit every shape without cutting into legs, and it fits over any fitted diaper, prefold, or flip inserts–making it an extremely versatile diaper.

Econobum Cover: commands a high price tag for a rather thin, very flimsy cover. But as a perk, it is quick drying. The front panel is wide enough to wrap around waist of baby. I’ve had no leaks with this cover outside of waiting too long to change a diaper. Its wide crotch allows for larger size inserts for heavy wetters.

Bumgenius Elemental: Two layers of organic cotton make this diaper very absorbent without any added inserts.  This is one of the trimmest diapers on the market. It is not stay dry but can easily become so by adding a layer of microfleece on top. For my super heavy wetter I add one microfiber insert underneath the cotton layers making it function well for day time.  The long cotton layers also allow folding to put extra absorbency where needed. The leg gussets hug baby legs snugly without leaving marks. Ideal diaper all the way through potty training.
